CLINICAL THERAPIST AND COUNSELLOR (he/him)

Cian Kerrisk is a highly experienced Clinical Therapist and Counsellor with twenty years experience in Community and Social Services, Psychotherapy and Counselling, Public Health, and Clinical Supervision and Education. He has worked in DHB and NGO Addiction and Mental Health Services, as well as in Private Practice. He has also been a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health, a School Counsellor, and a Psychological Therapist for a Specialist Clinical Services team for Children, Youth, and Families, and a team leader for Te Whatu Ora's Pregnancy and Parenting service. He also works with couples and new parents facing relationship challenges and adapting to life changes.

Cian’s primary treatment approach is Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (a form of Depth Psychology), which is a powerful, evidence based treatment for emotional discomfort or Mental Health concerns, an avenue for self-discovery, and a means towards enhancing relationships with others and the world.  He also has post-graduate training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches.

Cian is dedicated to working collaboratively with people while considering their unique experience and acknowledging the wider social, cultural, and interpersonal context of their situation.

Cian aims to create a safe, supportive, and impartial environment whereby individuals and couples can process their thoughts and feelings and gain insight into their personal dynamics and interpersonal patterns. He works empathically and collaboratively to help clients discover and consolidate healthier ways of interacting and communicating so they can strengthen their relationship and establish and maintain positive changes.

Cian has expertise in working with relationship and couple issues, addiction (drugs/alcohol), anxiety, the transition to parenthood, grief, loss and change, adjustment difficulties, men’s issues, stress and burnout, sleep issues, trauma, and attachment difficulties.

Therapy Approaches

Cian draws on both Relational/Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) when working with individuals and couples. His approach is also influenced by Attachment Theory.
